Dr. George Hill History Lecture


Dr. George Hill, the official historian of the Essex County Medical Society, shares insights into the organization’s history. He joined the society in 1981 as a professor of surgery at the New Jersey Medical School and later served as its 157th president from 1995 to 1996. After retiring from the medical school in 1996, he coordinated research at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.

The History of Saint Barnabas Medical Center

Dr. Fred Jacobs, a distinguished physician with a background in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, and law, who has held numerous leadership positions including President of the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners and Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, presented on the history of Saint Barnabas Medical Center. He currently serves as Executive Vice President for the Saint Barnabas Health Care System and director of the Saint Barnabas Quality Institute.

Sandra Moss History Lecture


The Civil War in New Jersey

The Civil War in New Jersey Sandra Moss, a former general internist in central New Jersey, now dedicates her time to medical history. She earned a master’s degree in History of Medicine in 2005 from the Rutgers-NJIT program, with a primary research interest in 19th-century medical practice in New Jersey. Moss has authored over 30 articles and encyclopedia entries on medical history, frequently lecturing to various historical organizations. Her book, The Country Practitioner, Ellis B. Townsend’s Brave Little Medical Journal, details a 19th-century medical journal from rural Burlington County. A past president of the Medical History Society of New Jersey, she received the Cowen Award for her contributions to medical history literature and serves as the perpetual program chair, bringing numerous speakers to the organization’s Princeton meetings. Tonight, she will be speaking about the Civil War in New Jersey.
